Raising Money for Charity

By Akira (DP2), Young Citizen of the Year

What am I doing?

A day in the life of Akira (DP2) - CAS

“Currently, I have done 29 shifts, and raised $733.”

(goal of $800)

Through Boxdivvy, I partake in an organisation that sends fresh produce directly from farmers to us in bulk, and we divide the produce into boxes per request of orders from the local community. My group (myself and a few peers) provides responsibly sourced produce to 50 households in my local area, and surplus produce is donated to the Greenway Residents Association. My work supports local farmers, encourages healthy eating and significantly reduces packaging, and earns money which I am donating to charity to continue supporting local farmers and providing nutritious food to those who need it in other countries.

My goals & achievements:

My main focus is donating through WorldVision, a non-government, non-profit organisation that helps families in poverty worldwide. My goal is to donate chickens, fish farms, fast-growing seeds, vegetable garden starter packs, fruit trees and a cow. These provide milk, eggs, fish, vegetables and fruit, which are essential nutritional foods and a source of sustainable income. The total cost is $800, which gave me a numerical goal to work towards for the past year. Currently, I have done 29 shifts, and raised $733. I am proud of this achievement, as I have overcome struggles, including COVID-19 restrictions and time management.

I would also like to support a cause within Australia. Rural Aid Australia is a charity that supports Australian farmers, providing resources, financial assistance and counselling to farmers, who endure hardship and are frequently exposed to Australia’s climate of drought, bushfires and floods. I want to donate to this charity because, as a proudly Australian person aware of the harsh Australian environment and our reliance on the farming community, I have sympathy and extreme gratitude for Australian farmers, who are often forgotten despite being crucial in supporting Australia. However, I have not yet set a goal, as I would like to meet my target for WorldVision first.

Due to my efforts in raising money for WorldVision and Rural Aid Australia, I was nominated for and received an award for 'Young Citizen of The Year' in my local area's council. I accepted the award in person, and gave a short speech after receiving the award from the mayor. I was shocked that my volunteering efforts had reached such recognition. I didn't even consider any other consequences from raising money than my pride of my achievement (and CAS). This has been an incredibly uplifting surprise. I encourage fellow CAS peers to put effort into their service, as it can be very rewarding.

If you would like to make a donation or possibly help me raise money next term through a bake sale/raffle, please contact me at akira.durran@westbournecollege.com.au Any contribution will be greatly appreciated.
